We at the Shelter Dog Bed Project are heading into our 14th year!
During our first 9 years, we donated over 2000 beds reaching rescues in 15 states. When we started out, we were just making the waterproof beds. As more rescues were reached, and we learned of what they needed, we supplied them with a variety of other comfort items such as sheets, towels, blankets and toys.
In 2022, we had reached a point where our workshop and every room in the house was filled with bedding donations. After much deliberation, we decided to close down. We were able to re-group and re-opened in March of 2023 with a new plan of operating.
We halted the incoming bedding donations, though we do still accept towels and blankets. We are working with the rescues on an individual basis making items that they request.
Currently, we have made hideys for Rescue Me Small Animal Placement for their ferrets and g uinea pigs.
We have made two-sided blankets with flannel and soft fabric for Helpers With Heart.
We made an awesome connection with Kelsea's Dream in Oklahoma. They came to Connecticut for the holiday in November and we sent them home with their truck full of waterproof beds, flannel beds, dog coats, collars and leashes, towels and blankets.
We make a variety of catnip toys and tug-toys for dogs and donate them to an awesome group, Crafters Helping Animals. They hold auctions 3 times a year with all proceeds going to a chosen rescue.
We made matts for the cat rescues using a pillowcase with a piece of mattress pad sewed inside.
As we move into colder weather, we make shelters for the feral cats. (See pictures of the types of shelters we make). We are excited about our new plan of operating as we can personalize what we make to meet the rescue's needs.
