Making Tug-Toys
Welcome to the Shelter Dog Bed Project's NEW: Making Tug Toys project!
A lot of work goes into making a “tug-toy” for dogs. It looks simple enough, several strands of different colors of t-shirt fabric, meticulously cut into long strips and braided and tied at the ends. Dogs love them, especially if you’ve got two dogs; one at each end of the toy, pulling and tugging.
THE PROCESS
Pic #1: Working with t shirt fabric on a giant roll. Pic #2: We cut 50" pieces off of the roll. Pic #3: We fold the pieces into six layers. Pic #4: Using the cutter on a Serger sewing machine. We cut through the six layers in a few seconds cutting the fabric into 6" wide strips. Pic #5 & #6: We cut four different color fabrics and box up the strips. Pic #7 & #8: Braided 3 way & 4 way finished tug toys!
Distribution
We work closely with a group in Middletown, New York called Helpers4Shelters Community Outreach Programs co-founded by Roxanne Fiorillo. Helpers4Shelters organize many events working with 4H , Girl Scouts and other volunteers where they make a variety of toys and other items for the rescue animals. We pass the strips to Roxanne and the tug toys are braided at these events then donated to any rescue in need.
